Workshop Summary

The main objective of this workshop is to challenge the thinking on how we consider
the long-term impact of investments when developing investment strategies. The format
will be aimed at promoting discussion and debtate around this theme.

Trustees will be left with a clearer understanding of impact investing and how to think
about developing a responsible investment philosophy. The workshop will empower
trustees to lead discussions wih investment consultants and investment managers on
responsible investing.

It is particularly timely, given that the European IORP II directive comes into effect in
January 2019 for Irish pension schemes, requiring trustees to disclose how they
consider the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria in their investment
decision-making processes. However, this is about taking the lead for the right reasons
rather than waiting for ever increasing regulation.

Incorporating impact – which can be aided by the ESG criteria and the UN´s
Sustainable develoment goals – is not about sacrificing returns, it is about delivering
more sustainable long-term returns and in turn securing the future of our ecosystem.

Workshop Outline

Below is an outline of what will be covered in the workshop, aimed at delivering applicable
learnings that trustees can apply in their stewardship role:

landscape and relevant frameworks
Part II – Defining a set of pension scheme values using the concept of Impact
Part III – The importance of looking beyond just backward-looking risk and return data
Part IV – Overcoming implementation challenges through the manager RFI process

In keeping with a workshop format the presenter will share key learnings and open up the
discussion to the group. The workshop will use case studies to enage the group, in particular
with respect to how trustees practically develop a responsible investment philosophy and

Presenter: Vincent McCarthy, CFA
Vincent has almost 12 years of experience advising high net worth individuals and
institutions, working with companies such as Merril Lynch in the United States and with
Davy, IFG and Invesco in Ireland. He holds a Business degree (1.1 Honours) from the
University of Limerick, a Masters in Finance from Fairfield University, Connecticut and is a
Chartered Financial Analyst.

In search of a new challenge he left his role as Head of Investment Consulting with Invesco
in 2017, embarking on an adventure through Latin America, learning Spanish and working in impact investment in Guatemala, the spark for thinking more seriously about how we can use the concept of impact across all investments.

Inspired by his enligtening experience and motivated by the inertia within the traditional
world around responsible investing, Vincent has established CoTerra Impact to be a catalyst
for change in how we think about business and investments.

In this workshop, Vincent will share key learnings from his experience of working in impact
investment and the research he has done since as he has worked to conceptualise his own
thoughts on applying a responsible investment policy in the real world.
